A qualifying line is only the beginning. To claim your citizenship by declaration, the German Federal Office of Administration (BVA) needs documented proof of your German ancestor, the rule that interrupted the line, and every link in between. Here is exactly what that entails:

Track down certified birth, marriage, and death records, often buried in fragmented, un-digitized German archives that only respond by post, in German. Your parents' marriage record carries as much weight as your own birth certificate. Then come the apostilles and certified translations.

Prepare your declaration

§ 5 is claimed by declaration, not by application — a different form set, filed in German with the BVA. Every spelling and date must cross-reference perfectly with your paper trail, because a single inconsistency can send the file back and burn months you may not have.
